Military physician expands reach as a locum tenens

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Oct. 10, 2011) – Weatherby Healthcare locum tenens physician Edward F. Miles, MD, Division of Radiation Oncology, Department of Radiology, Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, VA, and Laura Jacimore, MD, Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount, NC, have authored a case study recently published in Case Reports in Oncologic Medicine.

The report “Metachronous Anal Canal and Prostate Cancers with Simultaneous Definitive Therapy: A Case Report and Review of the Literature” discusses synchronous prostate cancer in male anal canal cancer patients and a simultaneous approach to treatment. It is the second piece published from an ongoing collaborative relationship to develop case studies of patients at Nash General Hospital. The team is hoping the reports can serve as a reference for other oncology specialists searching for information on how to treat similar patients.

The collaboration developed after Dr. Miles served at Nash General Hospital as a locum tenens with Weatherby Healthcare. He covered cancer patients for Dr. Jacimore, the sole radiation oncologist at the facility. Dr. Miles frequently returned to serve assignments there and eventually spearheaded the effort. “I had some interesting cases at the clinic and Dr. Miles has always been interested in publishing,” explained Dr. Jacimore. “He approached me about our writing up some cases for potential publication, and the writing experience provides a valuable addition to the curriculum vitae.”

The first article, “Aggressive Palliation in Extensive Stage Small Cell Lung Cancer, Practice Guidelines versus Clinical Practice: A Case Report and Review of the Literature” was published in Lung Cancer International. It is based on a patient with extensive stage small cell lung cancer for whom the team searched an optimal treatment for. “After much searching of the medical literature, I thought that this would be a good case to write up for submittal,” says Dr. Miles. “After gaining Dr. Jacimore’s approval, we worked together on it and I also invited the consultation and opinions of my partner, Dr. John Nelson, and eventually the article was accepted for publication.” The team is now collaborating on a third report regarding a patient with breast cancer and lymphoma.

“I have been working for Dr. Jacimore for several years now and have really enjoyed the experience,” he says. “She has an excellent staff and top notch equipment and procedures. It’s not “critical” per se for us to write [case studies], but I enjoy reading about difficult and interesting cases and writing/publishing helps expand my specialty knowledge base and may help me in the future if I decide to pursue academic medicine.” He also says the writing helps keep his “head in the game” on Radiation Oncology, particularly when he is deployed away from his practice.

Dr. Miles’ interest in writing for publication began with his work as a locum tenens about 3 years ago. He also serves as a Commander in the United States Navy, and takes military leave to serve at Dr. Jacimore’s facility. Working locum tenens jobs is a way for him to build future professional opportunities, he says. Also, it allows him to keep his competency levels up on the treatment planning system that he trained on at Dr. Jacimore’s clinic, a different system from what he uses at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, VA. He also says locum tenens complements his military service and vice versa.

“It expands my experience base and makes me more aware of the issues faced by these more ill patients. In turn, I bring a different set of eyes and training to bear on Dr. Jacimore’s patient population and her treatment planning techniques which is good for both of us.”
